How well are women represented in parliaments around the world? Short animations turn a large international dataset into data stories with bold typography and music. They are part of the project Women in Politics by Hahn+Zimmermann, which also includes an interactive scrollytelling website, a leporello, a poster and a T-shirt.

Main challenge

Handling a large dataset in animation – and deciding which of the many stories hidden in the data to tell.

Solution

The data was connected dynamically to the animations in Adobe After Effects, so every country and year could be updated without redrawing by hand. From the many possible stories, each film focuses on one clear message and ends with a call to action.
